After a quarter century of widespread internet availability, it’s easy to forget that there was a time when access to information about culture outside the mainstream wasn’t easy and took real persistence. Some of the most persistent people were fans of left-of-center rock music, and fanzines were one of their main tools for information sharing. The people who wrote fanzines were amateur writers and critics, motivated by little other than enthusiasm. Named for a line in a song by British punk band the Damned, Noise For Heroes was one such fanzine. There were better fanzines, and there were more informed writers, but NFH was typical of the period, and it has the advantage that the editor, Steve Gardner, still has the interest, the original paste ups, and the time needed to assemble to create a unique time capsule documenting a fan’s perspective on new wave and indie rock in the first few years of the Eighties.
